What are the Symptoms of Aniridia?
Aniridia is an eye condition in which the person shows a partial or complete absence of the iris. It is caused due to genetic factors. The word aniridia is derived from the Greek word aniridia which means without iris. The iris is the portion of the eye that gives color to it. The condition may be mild in some cases while severe in some. Aniridia can cause a reduction in visual acuity. It can also lead to an increased sensitivity to light. Symptoms
According to experts at the eye clinic, Aniridia is characterized by an underdeveloped iris, which may not be visible to the common people. In extreme cases, the iris may be completely absent. Although the iris is mainly affected, Aniridia can also cause the following symptoms.-
Sensitivity to Light: People with Aniridia show an increased sensitivity towards light. This symptom is also known as photophobia.
Corneal problems: People with Aniridia might show corneal problems as they become scarred due to a lack of limbal stem cells of the conjunctiva. It can lead to problems in vision.
Glaucoma: Aniridia may also increase eye pressure. This condition is known as Glaucoma.
Cataract: People with Aniridia are more prone to having cataracts and various other conditions affecting the lens.
Nystagmus: Some infants who are affected by Aniridia can show the presence of Nystagmus. It is also known as dancing eyes as the person shows an involuntary rhythmic shaking of the eyes.
Retinal problems: Aniridia can also result in reduced visual acuity due to underdevelopment of the fovea, a part of the retina.
Wilms tumor: People with Aniridia have chances of having a Wilms tumor, a rare type of kidney cancer.
